WELCOME TO SIGIRIYA

HISTORY

It is a fortress which is 660 ft high, built on an enormous rock.  It was built by the king Kasyapa during 477AD to 495 AD.  After the death of the king it was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya is known as the lion rock. The name of this place derived from this structure sinhagiri, the lion’s rock. The king Kashyapa built this palace on the flat top of this rock and decorated the inside with colorful frescoes.  Sigiriya is famous for the ruins of that palace, because they have an archeological value.  These ruins are taken the tourists attraction as they are surrounded by the most splendid gardens, ponds and other structures.

Frescoes

In the middle level of the rock, there are very beautiful frescoes.   These paintings are  covered in a large area of the rock and around 500 ladies decorated the wall.  These pictures are rather similar to paintings seen in the Ajanta Caves in India.

Mirror wall

The mirror wall is a beautiful and very important place in the middle level of the rock.  It is made of kind of porcelain and well polished that the king could see himself whilst he walked along side.  Graffiti were written on the surface of the mirror wall by tourists.  Those graffiti includes poetry, verses, pieces of prose and commentary.  They have expressed their happiness through graffiti.  But now the graffiti writing has been banned for the protection of the old writing.

Gardens

Gardens for royals on the west side of Sigiriya,   have been created on a symmetrical lay-out and those are very important aspects. They are among oldest landscaped gardens in the world. The gardens are divided into three distinct but linked forms: water gardens, cave and boulder garden terraced garden.

LION’S GATE

The Lion’s gate is a very important place and it is the main entrance of Sigiriya where located the northern side of the rock, and it is sculpted lion’s head above the legs and paws. But many years ago the head was broken down.
